MONTHLY PRACTICE TIPS PRACTICE GUIDE

Creating a Mood or an Image with Your Performance
Perhaps you think you know your piece now that you have learned all the notes and rhythms and can usually play it without mistakes. Are you wondering why your teacher continues to ask you to practice it? What is the tempo marking of the piece? Is it fast or slow? Composers often provide many clues as to how they want their music to be played. What is the mood of the piece? Is it happy, sad, reflective? Perhaps it should be played with a sense of humor. Some people like to create a story to help them express the musical ideas; some people prefer to create a visual image. Try to enjoy experimenting with the way you express the music. You might want to experiment with the dynamics or the tempo. Try playing your piece for your family or friends and see if they can guess what mood, or moods, you are trying to express. You might want to ask them to suggest what mood(s) they feel when you play the piece. Maybe you can create a story or an image together.
